The first part of telling your family's story begins with research. The journey starts by finding the oldest documented relative on your family line.
Various methods of research are used to find your relatives. Once the earliest documented ancestor is located, the story of your family's legacy begins.
If your early ancestors happened to be enslaved, the average earliest finds are usually around the early to mid-1800s.
Some ancestors migrated from the Caribbean islands or lived as free citizens in the United States before and during slavery. In some cases, the discovery of free black people dates back to the early 1600s and 1700s. In rare instances, ancestors who were born in Africa are found.
The only way to know about your history for sure is to have it researched.
